NHS Norfolk and Waveney is urging everyone to be more aware of the facts about HIV, and act on that knowledge, as World AIDS Day takes place on Thursday 1 December 2011

The UK theme for World AIDS Day is Act Aware. The aims are to ensure that we all know more about HIV so we can take care of our health and that of others, and also to end prejudice against people who have the virus.

There is no cure for HIV, but treatment can keep the virus under control and the immune system healthy.

While people living with HIV have a potentially shortened lifespan there is now clear evidence, that with early intervention and medical treatment, they can live long and productive lives.

Anyone who is sexually active or uses injecting equipment is at risk of acquiring HIV.

There are more than 90,000 people with HIV in the UK and there are about 6,000-7,000 new diagnoses every year.

More heterosexual people than gay men were diagnosed with HIV in 2007: more than 1 in 10 new diagnosis were among young people and 5% of people diagnosed were over 55.

Jonathan Williams, an Assistant Director of Public Health at NHS Norfolk and Waveney, said: "HIV can be passed on through infected blood, semen, vaginal fluids, sharing injecting equipment, or breast milk. One of the most common ways that the virus is passed on is by having sex without a condom with someone living with HIV.

"Free condoms are available at sexual health clinics a GP surgeries and via the C-Card scheme, visit www.norfolk.nhs.uk or www.gywpct.nhs.uk for more details."

Allison Chaplin, HIV commissioner for NHS Norfolk and Waveney, added: "Within NHS Norfolk & Waveney there are more than 450 people living with HIV  and we continue to support these patients and those whom support and  care for them by providing access to a wide variety of services.

“Services such as EAST in Norfolk and the Terrence Higgins Trust in Waveney support those people from the initial diagnosis to enabling people to self manage their condition to improve their physical and emotional well being."

For more details about HIV, visit www.tht.org.uk or www.HIVaware.org.uk

National Junior League Final

UEA City of Norwich SC competed this Sunday (27th November) at the National Junior League Final at Corby International Swimming Pool. The lineup of the top 8 teams in the country were City of Derby, Boldmere and Hillingdon from the South and from the North were Southport SC, City of Newcastle, Stockport Metro and reigning champions City of Leeds. After qualifying third fastest of the Southern teams, we knew it was going to be an exciting final.

The atmosphere was electric as the teams lined up for the parade. The spectator gallery was awash with the competing team’s flags. Every Norwich swimmer was set to swim their best.

UEA City of Norwich swimmers posted 25 individual personal best times from 32 events. Many of which have only been set in the last 4 weeks. Of the 17 relays, 14 were faster than the semi- final in October. Outstanding first placed swims came from Sam Ross, Chloe Galindez, Nick Perkins and Lilyella Craw-Seaman. In addition Nick and Chloe received Top Swimmer awards in their age groups. The team was DQ free a fantastic achievement under National standard pressure.

Swimmers showed passion and dedication to the team, challenging hard for every point they could achieve. It was a fabulous team effort. After 49 events Norwich finished 6th, one place higher than in the 2010 final, and just 1 point adrift of 5th place Boldmere. The City of Leeds retained their well-deserved Champions title.

The support was again outstanding from parents and swimmers alike. Final team points were:

City of Leeds 321
Stockport Metro 270
Hillingdon SC 237
Southport 221
Boldmere 207
UEA Norwich 206
City of Derby 169
City of Newcastle 133

The team was supported by 3 Team Managers, 3 Young Volunteers and 3 Officials. Thank you to all of those who made the day possible, including the young volunteers who helped to make the whole day a team event and John Toll who was present on behalf of the Eastern Junior League Committee.

Jack Ridel, who recently came third in the British amateur kitesurfing, has entered a competition to win a kitesurfing holiday of a lifetime. He is currently in second place to win but there are only 45 votes between him and the winner so please help to make his dreams come true!

He and his partner Keira represent Norfolk in competitions throughout the British Isles. Currently he is third in the UK, and Keira is fourth. If he wins they will spend the time intensely training and hopefully can make Norfolk even more proud of them and put it on the map as a major venue for kitesurfing.

How to vote: You need to vote via Facebook – go to the Breo Facebook website

https://www.facebook.com/Breoofficial?sk=app_175062912584011

go to the Breo time of your life top 50 webpage, find Jack’s photo (the cheesy grin beardy kitesurfer fourth row down, first on the left), click on it, put your email address in and click vote. Then go to your email and find the confirmation email from Breo, on that there will be a link to verify your vote.

Everyone who votes will be put in a prize draw to win one of ten watches so you have nothing to lose!

Voting ends midday Wednesday 30th November 2011

Silent movie
After a businesslike introduction to the manufacture of crackers (did you know the cardboard centres were called tum-tums?), this appealing short suddenly switches tone, as a festive family prances around a Christmas tree and pulls a gigantic cracker. But what - or who - lurks within? (Alex Davidson)

Susie’s Favourite Recipes

Jam & Lemon Curd Tarts

225 g (8 oz) **Self-raising Flour
25 g (1 oz) Sugar
100 g (4 oz) Margarine
30 ml (2 tbsp) Cold Water
Jam or/and Lemon Curd
Patty Tin

**Please note you can use plain flour but self-raising gives the pastry a softer more crumblier texture.

* Preheat oven to 230 C, 450 F and Gas Mark 8.

* Put the flour and sugar into the basin and add the margarine.

* Lightly rub in the margarine using your fingertips. Lift the mixture up as you rub the mixture together. This allows the air in and helps to have a lighter pastry.

* Using a knife, add a little water at a time, stir the mixture until you have a nice stiff consistency.

* Kneed the mixture in the bowl until it becomes one piece of dough.

* Turn onto a floured board or work surface and roll out to the thickness you prefer.

* Cut out 12 circles and place into the tin.

* Put a spoonful of jam or lemon curd into each, not too much as it will bubble up as it cooks and could bubble over (this would make a sticky mess).

* Place into the oven and cook for about 15 minutes, until golden brown.

* Enjoy!

Maggie Wheeler has been reappointed chair of Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust after accepting an extension to continue her vital role.

After 1 January 2012, Ms Wheeler will become chair of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust as the Trust merges with neighbouring Suffolk Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust.

Ms Wheeler said: “I am honoured to be reappointed by the governors to serve as chair of the merged Trust. I am looking forward to getting to know new colleagues in Suffolk, and being a part of making the new joint Trust work.”

The Board of Governors believe that Ms Wheeler will help provide stability and support by remaining in post after the Trust merges.

Maggie added: “I am so proud of everything we have achieved over the last few years, and I’m really pleased to be part of the Trust’s future.”

The popular reappointment will see Ms Wheeler in the hot seat for a further two years until 31 December 2013.

Deepdale Christmas Market

Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December 2011

www.deepdalechristmasmarket.co.uk

It may still be Summer season and incredibly busy in the coastal village of Burnham Deepdale, but thoughts are already turning to Christmas. Preparations for the Deepdale Christmas Market are going well.

All the stall spaces for the Deepdale Christmas Market have been filled. That’s over 40 stalls, who will join the permanent shops of Dalegate Market and Deepdale Café, welcoming visitors on the first weekend of December. Great food & drink, Christmas decorations & presents, plenty of festive spirit!

“I’ve had some very strange looks from people when I’ve dropped off leaflets about the Christmas Market, but we want visitors to know the market is happening, so they can plan their return visit in December. It does seem a little strange mentioning Christmas when campers are enjoying the summer sun, but events like Deepdale Christmas Market don’t happen without a lot of pre planning.” said Jason Borthwick, one of the organising team.

Now the hunt begins for entertainment over the weekend. Hunstanton Concert Band are already booked for Christmas Carols on the Saturday from 2pm to 4pm. St Mary’s Carollers, from the village church, will be joining the band and supplying carol sheets for anyone who fancies a sing-a-long. There’s also a possibility that the local school choir will be performing during the weekend.

The team are keen to hear from any groups or individuals who might be interested in entertaining the visitors at Deepdale Christmas Market.

Deepdale Christmas Market takes place on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December 2011 at Dalegate Market in Burnham Deepdale on the beautiful north Norfolk coast. The market opens at 10am on both days and closes at 4pm. Full details of the event can be found on the website: www.deepdalechristmasmarket.co.uk

The Mid-Norfolk Railway is pleased to announce a bumper line up of events for 2012. Following on from the successes of 2011 with the first ever steam gala, the MNR plans a recession-busting season with a number of new events as well as those which the railway is now renowned for.

No month is left untouched with the first event kicking off the running season in February with the mixed traffic weekend on the 18th and 19th. The Spring Diesel Gala will be a 3-day event running from Friday 30th March to Sunday April 1st. The MNR’s extensive home fleet gala will be in operation along with several visiting locomotives including a Class 55 Deltic.

A new event and one that few railways could pull off due to the location and the locomotives required is the Stratford Depot Weekend. The MNR is home to several former Stratford machines including 31s, 37s and 47s along with a number of former Stratford staff. This weekend will be celebrated with a re-union of former Stratford depot workers as well as the use of Stratford Celebrity locomotives. This event will run from Friday May 5th – Sunday 7th.

May 19th and 20th sees the repeat of the popular Southern Gala weekend. Our class 50 ‘Ramillies’ will be in traffic along with the 73 and 3-CIG as well as perhaps a special visitor.

June 23rd and 24th sees the 1960s weekend which is the precursor to our 2nd Steam Gala weekend which will run from July 13th – 15th. This is then followed by a new event to the MNR calendar, the Railway at War. This will be held on Saturday August 4th and Sunday August 5th.

It has been a long term aim of the MNR to introduce a real ale festival and August 25th – 27th will be the first annual MNR Real Ale Festival at Dereham. Anything goes as far as the train services with a variety of steam, diesel and rail car action.

The must-attend event in the preservation calendar for 2012 is the Class 47 Golden Jubilee event which will run from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd of September. Following on from the legendary Class 37 event, a number of locomotives will be in service representing the different varieties of these popular locomotives as they reach their 50th anniversary. Both the home fleet and visitors will be in attendance with a couple of special guests both mainline and preserved.

The final new event of the year will the ‘Multiple Matters’ weekend on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October. This will see all the MNR’s fleet of multiple units in service as well as some invited visitors.

We hope you will be able to join us at some point during a superb year to come.

'This Is Just To Say'

An interactive poetry performance by the Fringe First award winning poet, Hannah Jane Walker.

This is just to say is an intimate conversation about saying sorry with a small group of people at a table. A warm and engaging fusion of intimate performance and poetry in a welcoming environment, wherein you sit, have some whisky, and if you like, share your thoughts and ideas about apology. This is just to say unpicks the fabric of identities, reflecting on notions of cultural identity and the misuse of language.

‘The show is confident, mature and smooth, the content endearing and engaging. The audience leave hyper-aware of when they say sorry’.
- Total Theatre

‘...there is something about Walker’s gentle, almost sorrowful understanding that makes us want to embrace the messiness within and share our own catastrophes.’
- Lyn Gardner, Guardian Theatre Critic

Everyone knows Christmas doesn’t start until December, even if a few advertisers jump the gun.

There can be no better place during the festive season than the West End of the North Norfolk Coast. This beautiful part of the world is already famous for its seafood, great pubs, beautiful beaches and shopping, but for those in the know, it’s also the best place to get Christmas started.

With a combination of the Fakenham Christmas Tree Festival, Holkham’s ‘Victorian Christmas Celebration’, Creake Abbey’s Christmas Farmers’ Market and the Deepdale Christmas Market you have a wonderful opportunity to eat, drink and complete your Christmas shopping all in one weekend.

Fakenham Parish Church holds its 11th Christmas Tree Festival from Thursday 1st to Thursday 8th December 2011 between 10am and 8pm daily. This ever popular occasion attracted 25,000 people last year and raised over £18,000 for charities mostly in small coins! This year 78 charities will be taking part and there will be 90 trees! Entrance to the Festival is Free, but please bring a bag of coins to donate to the charity trees of your choice. Inside there will be a Christmas Bazaar selling a wide range of Christmas goods; also refreshments, a Tombola and a Grand Draw. According to Norfolk Tourist Board, ‘This is a spectacular event not to be missed’ - www.fakenhamparishchurch.org.uk

It will be a truly a wonderful experience for visitors to Holkham Hall on 3 and 4 December for a ‘Victorian Christmas Celebration’, as Queen Victoria arrives to stay for Christmas. Inside the wonderfully decorated hall, musicians will lead for dances and traditional carols will be sung, games played and stories told by the fireside. A daring fire breather will perform, redcoat soldiers will keep guard and in the kitchens, cooks and household staff will be found bustling to get the royal feast prepared. All will be captured for posterity by period photographic camera and techniques. Florence Nightingale will drop by to recruit more nurses and the Holly King, sitting beneath his Christmas Tree, will give out gifts to the children. - www.holkham.co.uk

Hundreds of ingredients produced and made in Norfolk will be for sale at Creake Abbey’s Christmas Farmers’ Market, North Creake on Saturday 3rd December from 9.30am – 1pm. Over 45 producers are booked to attend. Together with the regulars the market is welcoming Godwick Turkeys and Norfolk Saffron. To inspire you to give this years’ Christmas dishes an interesting Norfolk twist, top local chefs including Richard Bainbridge will be demonstrating some of their favourite recipes. The producers will be offering tastings galore plus all the info you might need to make an informed purchase. Cookery demonstrations in the workshop on the car park start at 10am. - www.creakeabbey.co.uk

The annual Deepdale Christmas Market welcomes over 50 stalls to Burnham Deepdale to join Dalegate Market’s shops & Deepdale Café on both Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December from 10am to 4pm. The stalls & shops offer presents, decorations, food & drink, cheese, clothing, jewellery, cupcakes, photography and you can even buy your Christmas trees. There will be a wonderful selection of refreshments available from Deepdale Café, including paella, mulled wine, paninis and their usual great food & cakes. For those around on Friday evening, then a visit to The Jolly Sailors, Brancaster Staithe for their Sausage Fest would be a great addition to a weekend of festive cheer. – www.jollysailors.co.uk

Closely linked to trade and industry by its proximity to the River Wensum, King Street has experienced highs and lows over the centuries – from being one of the City’s oldest and most important streets, lined with high-status housing for merchants and civic leaders, to a slum area of squalid yards and red light activity. During the latter part of the 20th century the street suffered a slow decline, losing almost all its shops, industries and services, including 27 pubs and 2 breweries.

Regeneration in recent decades has begun a transformation in the Quarter. Significant redevelopment projects at historic buildings, such as Dragon Hall and Wensum Lodge, have encouraged educational visits and tourism in the area. New housing has boosted resident numbers and improved facilities. The street and its neighbourhood are re-discovering their identity, celebrating the past, learning from previous difficulties and establishing a place for the future.

The newly created King Street Cultural Quarter is a group made up of local residents, businesses and others with an interest in the area. The aim of the Cultural Quarter is to highlight the already budding artistic and historical cultural aspects of the area, and to help put this part of our ‘Fine City’ back on the map for Norwich residents and visitors.

A very well attended public meeting in mid October formally brought the Cultural Quarter into existence and the coordinating committee have just met to get plans in motion.

Despite its infancy, the King Street Cultural Quarter has been busy. The King Street Community Gardens project has been established and you can see its beginnings around the Cultural Quarter. A ‘Big Lunch’ event was held along the street, which woke up the street to some of its own gems. There’s been a walkabout to enable residents to raise their concerns about the area and a big gathering of support to re-open of Wensum Lodge sports hall and the retention of the car park.

The idea of the King Street Cultural Quarter is to enable things to happen. The committee and members represent all sorts of groups and interests, all working on varying projects and developments. The Quarter is there to help those projects, establish links between residents, businesses and other organisations, and to be a catalyst and conduit for the great ideas, passion and life that will re-establish King Street as an important part of this cultural City.

Membership of the Quarter is free. We’ll keep the website up to date with news and opportunities. We hope locals, businesses and other organisations will get in touch and help shape how the Cultural Quarter develops.

AUTUMN LEAVES
LEAD TO DANGER

How nice it is to see the colourful array of leaves in the Autumn, but this can result in sudden breakdowns and very expensive car repairs.

Modern cars have a number of chambers at the rear of the engine bay, known as the Plenum Chamber,
this is where the bonnet meets the windscreen, and where the heating system draws in the air.

Within the chamber there is a drain hole so water which runs off the windscreen goes into a tube and then runs onto the ground under the car.

So this is the time of year when leaves fall into the chambers via the grille near windscreen housing and block the drain holes, causing a build up of water when it rains.

The water now seeps into areas which should be protected such as electronic equipment which controls computers dealing with braking systems and engine management sensors.

While you take time to check oils and water and top up the washer bottle, just spend a few minutes clearing any leaves away in the chamber areas.
