Mental health trust is beating the bugs with free hand hygiene stations
The Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust is leading the way in cleanliness as the first NHS Trust in the UK to introduce hand sanitiser stations at no cost to the Trust. The 18 units across Trust sites are for service user, staff and public use and are simply activated by a sensor-operated device when hands are placed inside, negating the risk of cross-infection as no surfaces are touched.

Although the Trust can boast of one of the lowest infection rates in the country, the complimentary hand sanitiser stations will help tackle infections such as MRSA.
Director of Infection Prevention and Control, Val Leggett said:
“These new units are visually striking and will be positioned in ward receptions and restaurant areas to prompt service users, visitors and staff to clean their hands on entry and exit to our sites.
It is really great that the SaniPosts have been provided free of charge to the Trust as part of a government initiative to promote higher standards of public hand hygiene in this country.”
The SaniPosts also comply with the Trust’s green policy as the units can help reduce costs and environmental impact compared with standard hand-washing, as the stations do not require water or electricity, but instead are operated by batteries which last approximately 75,000 cycles.
The units have been supplied free of charge by SaniPost. Warren Edmondson, Managing Director of SaniPost, said: "There has been growing concern around the spread of infection and we are happy to allay these fears by installing SaniPost in NHS hospitals. The stations allow for better infection control because there is no need to touch buttons or levels."

Take steps towards better health - with Life 4 Life
NHS Norfolk is inviting people across the county to take part in Life 4 Life - a new programme designed to help them adopt a healthier lifestyle.
The programme is coordinated by Paul Wilson and the Norfolk Life team at the Great Yarmouth Community Trust, and is run in partnership with NHS Norfolk.
Life 4 Life is open to all adults in Norfolk who are overweight - that is those with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25-30, or with a waist measurement of more than 37-40in for men, and about 31-34in for women.
Don't worry if you don't know your BMI - the team can work it out for you. They will then join you up to the Life 4 Life programme, or advise you on what other services you can access. All participants must be aged 18 and over.
LIFE stands for Lifestyle, Improvements, Food and Exercise, and the sessions are delivered to groups of 12-15 adults. Booking is essential.
There are currently Life 4 Life trainers in Great Yarmouth, Thetford, Norwich, Diss, Reepham and Holt, and the list of venues is set to increase.
Paul said: "The key to this programme is to offer something that is sustainable. We’re looking at an all round improvement in lifestyle and wellbeing not merely weight loss.
"The sessions are designed to allow participants to reflect on their own lifestyle and then think about simple changes they could make by giving them good quality information. They are designed to be interactive, enabling people to get the most they can out of each session.
"We would encourage anyone who is interested to phone us and book a place on the course. Venues will be confirmed when we know how many people wish to attend."
The four-week programme consists of a two-hour session each week, covering nutrition and exercise theory. It has been written by exercise and nutrition specialists, and is delivered by qualified Life 4 Life trainers.
Topics covered include metabolism, food labelling, food groups, benefits of exercise, goal setting, barriers to exercise - and much more!
Lucy Macleod, NHS Norfolk's Consultant in Public Health, said: "In Norfolk, on average, more than a quarter - 26.85% - of all adults are obese. As the leaders of the local NHS, we continue to work hard to reduce that trend, and we are commissioning Life 4 Life as a preventative service to help overweight adults avoid obesity.
“The main causes of obesity are known to be a lack of exercise and a high calorie diet, and Life 4 Life aims to address this.
“Obesity is one of NHS Norfolk's top public health priorities. There is a very real cost to the NHS as a result of obesity related conditions, but the cost is much greater to the people who suffer from them.
"Life 4 Life could be the first step towards a healthier future, and we encourage anyone interested to get in contact."

‘Wild About the Wensum’ Event at Pensthorpe
Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, host of BBC Springwatch and famous for nature and conservation in Norfolk, is hosting the fourth action-packed ‘Wild About the Wensum’ day (www.wildaboutthewensum.blogspot.com) on Saturday May 22nd 2010 from 10am to 5pm. The event coincides with the 2010 International Day of Biodiversity which sees events around the world highlighting the importance of our habitat and wildlife.
Visitors will find local craft demonstrations, mobile making, face painting, a bird radio tracking game, bird identification sessions with local experts and many more games and adventures. Music will be provided by Rig a Jig Jig. There will also be a hog roast and barbecue.
David Hunter, Chairman of North Norfolk Tourism Roundtable and CE of Fakenham Racecourse who are sponsoring the event, said: “The Pensthorpe Conservation Trust is to be thoroughly commended and supported in their initiative to enlighten, engage and enthuse the public in the unique day out - Wild About the Wensum.”
He adds: “This one day event, which is in its fourth year, goes from strength to strength and provides the perfect opportunity for people of all ages to understand and appreciate the rich wildlife and fauna that is found in the Wensum River Valley. It is a day full of fun, education and enjoyment and is completely free to everyone. You just can't beat it.”
Commenting on the wild day out Tim Nevard, Trustee of the Pensthorpe Conservation Trust said: “Wild About the Wensum’ is an event for all the family and is a great opportunity to celebrate the natural history and heritage of the Wensum Valley. You can expect numerous activities including mini beast explorations, guided walks, nature quizzes, treasure hunts and so much more.”
“The River Wensum is designated as a Special Area for Conservation (SAC) by the European Union and Natural England and we are delighted that Fakenham Race Course, Morrisons and Fakenham Learning Partnership are supporting this year’s event to help us conserve this fabulous, internationally-recognised landscape.”
Admission to Pensthorpe and the event is free on the day, with a nominal £4 car parking charge per vehicle to help make it financially sustainable and to encourage car sharing.
Deb Jordan, Pensthorpe’s owner said: “This is our fourth annual Wild About the Wensum celebration. Last year over 4,000 people attended the event and we hope that many more local people will take the opportunity to come on May 22nd to discover this amazing natural world on their doorstep.”
Why Celebrate the River Wensum in Norfolk?
- The River Wensum has been awarded Europe’s highest level of conservation protection and designated a ‘Special Area of Conservation’.
- The River Wensum is the only river between the Thames and the Humber to have this designation.
It is celebrated for its outstanding chalk river fauna, including brown trout, white-clawed crayfish, Desmoulin’s whorl snail, otters and a large number of dragonfly and damselfly species. It is also important for the unspoiled nature of its catchment area and the quality of its aquatic flora.

The Great Yarmouth Town Centre Partnership has declared May 31st 2010 as Bank ‘Wallyday’ Monday as they set about organising another attempt at the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people dressed as the Where’s Wally book character in one place. The official record attempt was launched on 14th April in Great Yarmouth Market Place with the restoration of a 55ft tall banner of Wally, or Waldo as he is also known.
Volunteers assisted in re-painting the giant print of Wally that was originally completed by children from St. Nicholas Priory Junior School last year. The banner had been placed on the roof of Market Gates shopping centre in an effort to be caught on the Google Earth satellite, but the paint has since faded.
The giant image of Wally created a bit of a stir by covering a large section of Great Yarmouth Market Place whilst being painted. The intention is to suspend 15m x 5m banner from one of the buildings surrounding the Market Place on Monday 31st May..
Following a turnout of 901 ‘Wally’s’ for the first attempt last October, Town centre manager Jonathan Newman is convinced that Great Yarmouth has an appetite for a second attempt, “Everyone had such a great time when we tried this before I am certain that many of those people who already have a Wally costume will want to give it another go” And in preparation for the day Mr. Newman has ordered another 1,000 red and white striped t-shirts and bobble hats to supply to potential Wally’s who haven’t already got a costume. However there is an element of caution being used as having sold 1,200 costumes in the run up to the previous record attempt only 900 of those actually turned up on the day. This time around the costumes can be pre-ordered at £6 each, however they will not be available to collect until the morning that the World Record attempt takes place at 1pm on Monday 31st May in Great Yarmouth Market Place.
Anyone wishing to take part will need to register either on-line at www.gytcp.co.uk/wally or at Books Inside and Boots in Market Gates Shopping Centre and Palmers Department Store in the Market Place.
Registering will cost £1 per person which is being equally split between two charities; Macmillan Cancer Care and the Have a Heart appeal which gives money to local children’s charities. Where’s Wally costumes can also be ordered from each of the shops listed.

According to Guinness World Records the current record is:

Fun for all at this year’s Museums at Night Special
at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich
at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich
This May the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery are once again joining forces to bring an exciting night of activities and entertainment to Norwich as part of the Europe-wide Museums at Night celebration. This year’s event, on Wednesday 19 May, runs from 5pm until 11pm and marks the beginning of an association with Norfolk & Norwich Festival. It also forms part of A History of the World, the BBC’s flagship partnership with the British Museum and museums around the country. Admission is free and people are welcome to call in at any time during the evening (booking not required).

It is the third year that Norwich’s two leading museums have collaborated to stage a Museums at Night event for the city. The event will be packed with live music, storytelling, tours and creative fun for adults and children, all in an exciting late night atmosphere.
“We're really delighted to be bringing Norwich Castle and the Sainsbury Centre together again for another Museums at Night evening. Last year's event created a big buzz and this year's is set to be even more spectacular with the Norfolk & Norwich Festival and BBC coming on board too. It's great that so many partners are joining forces to deliver a fantastic event for the city” - Esther Morgan, East of England Renaissance Hub.

The theme of the event is ‘treasure', in celebration of the world-class collections held at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery. The theme links to the museums’ participation in the project, A History of the World, during 2010. In Norfolk, 10 objects were selected to represent its place in the world (5 of these are held at Norwich Castle and 1 at the Sainsbury Centre). The BBC will be running a video diary room and stand at the event on the 19 May and want people to bring their own objects along.
“Part of the History of the World project is about creating a whole new set of objects, not from museums, but from the general public. We want people in Norfolk to share with us objects that are special to them and that tell a story. At the Museums at Night event we will be helping people upload their objects on to the BBC’s History of the World website and they can also record a short video diary piece about their object if they want to. So, if you’re coming to the event, bring an object along!” - Martyn Weston, BBC Norfolk.

On the night people will have a special opportunity to get their hands on museum objects. They will be able to experience handling a collection of flints from Norwich Castle, which includes hand axes from Africa dating back 1.5 million years. Visitors will also be able to handle objects from countries such as Papua New Guinea from the Sainsbury Centre’s world art handling collection. This collection is currently an essential part of the Centre’s 3-year Heritage Lottery Funded community outreach project, Culture of the Countryside. Other object discoveries can be made on the Relics Trail through the museum, which is packed with challenges. The trail links to the CBBC series Relic: Guardians at the Museum, an episode of which will be screened during the evening.

Artist-led games will also offer the chance to explore the Sainsbury Centre and see the museum in a new light despite the darkness! Visitors will find the unexpected in the far reaches of the Centre with interventions created by the Norfolk & Norwich Festival, which will reveal the museum as it has never been seen before. The fun will include a chance to venture into the Centre’s Reserve Collection with only torch light to find the objects on display.

“It is fantastic the Norfolk & Norwich Festival is featuring Museums at Night. It is fitting that an European initiative that encourages access to culture for all is now associated with the international arts festival for our region” - Jonathan Holloway, Norfolk & Norwich Festival.

Creative activities including a torc-making workshop will keep little fingers busy, while adults will enjoy a fascinating talk from archaeological finds expert Adrian Marsden and opportunities to talk to Sainsbury Centre resident artist, Eliza Bracher. There will also be an eclectic mix of performance including story-telling, the Hot Boppin’ Girls, Girl in a Thunderbolt, Futter, magician Bob Percy, live music from the Neutrinos and Dim Goddess. Chen Hong will be giving calligraphy demonstrations during the evening inspired by the collections at NorwichCastle and at the Sainsbury Centre. Regarded as a ‘cultural treasure’ in his homeland, Mr Hong is an expert and eloquent painter of traditional Chinese motifs (in residence at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery during May). A packed programme with something for everyone - and it’s completely free!

The Norfolk & Norwich Festival will also be bringing further excitement and intrigue to the Sainsbury Centre on Wednesday 19 May in the shape of a 15-foot inflatable art installation. Kurt Perschke’s RedBall: Norwich is making its UK debut as part of the Festival and will be squished into 14 different nooks and crannies across Norwich city centre.
The event at the Sainsbury Centre is the largest of eight exciting and diverse Museums at Night events taking place in the city this year, making it the biggest Museums at Night programme Norwich has ever seen! Other venues hosting events organised by Norwich HEART comprise: the Assembly House; the Cathedral of St John the Baptist; Colman’s Mustard Shop & Museum; Dragon Hall; The Forum; The Guildhall and Norwich Cathedral.

Madi Boyd - The Point of Perception at the Forum

The Point of Perception is a collaborative project between artist Madi Boyd and neuroscientists Dr Mark Lythgoe and Dr Beau Lotto.
They present a multi-media sculpture, an immersive experience, that aims to create a puzzle in the brain of the viewer.
Deliberately designed to confuse the human brain it makes us question why we perceive what we do and how our brains process the visual. Beautiful and mysterious, this unique art installation will mesmerise people of all ages.

NGS - Afternoon Holly Tea by the Norfolk Broads
Visitors to a Norfolk National Gardens Scheme open garden are enticed to sample “Afternoon Holly Tea” at How Hill Farm Garden. Owned and tended by Peter Boardman, he has created three separate gardens here dating back as far as 1968. Peter opens his garden for the NGS on the 23rd May 2010 (1pm - 5pm), admission £3.50 with children free.
Peter was invited to taste Holly Tea with James Wong on the BBC 2 series ”Grow your own Drugs.” Christmas Special. James, 28 is an ethnabotanist, which means he knows what use plants can be. His programme features many natural remedies. Here in Norfolk Peter Boardman is obviously of the same thinking as James Wong. Peter has a “Collection of Holly” with the ”Wolf-Fenton Award” from the Holly Society of America. (The Award is given to an individual or individuals for outstanding service and dedication to the Holly Society of America. It is their most prestigious award).
How Hill Farm garden consists of nearly twelve acres with two pretty gardens around the house. The third started in 1968 leading to a three acre Broad dug in 1978 with views over River Ant and Turf Fen Mill. The garden has a Broad, four ponds, the site of an old Broad with 5ft Tussock sedges, with about an acre of indigenous ferns under oak and alder. It features paths through rare conifers, rhododendrons, azaleas, ornamental trees, shrubs, bamboos and herbaceous plants and good vistas. Bordering on the Broads, the boats can be seen as they quietly sail and motor past. This is a really tranquil spot with windmills and magnificent gardens. There will be English tea and homemade cakes available in the thatched barn as usual, but also the opportunity to try South American Holly Tea.
Garden owner Peter Boardman said "it was a surprise to be asked to appear on the “Grow your Drugs” programme. I have always received a bit of interest in Holly over Christmas but this was quite different. It was not until after it was broadcast I realised how popular the programme was and how much interest Holly tea had created. Now visitors can try it for themselves. Holly tea is made from a species called “Ilex Paraguariensis” which is grown in South America, here in England the weather is too cold for it to survive. It is drunk by many millions of people there but we here drink tea derived from Camellias. Paraguariensis is recognised by chemists as a stimulant for the nerves and muscles as well as the brain.”
NGS County Organiser Fiona Black said “With the increased interest of edible plants, natural remedies and growing your own produce, gardening has a whole new concept. Not only is How Hill Farm a great garden to visit but it also has the magnificent view of the man made Norfolk Broads. Afternoon tea with a brew of Holly tea and home made cakes on the Norfolk Broads would just make a NGS garden visit complete”.
If your garden is of high quality, character and at least forty-five minutes interest Contact County Organiser Fiona Black to discuss opening your garden. Tel 01692 650247
