The Norfolk National Gardens Scheme is encouraging visitors to “sit on a NGS garden seat this spring!” It is an opportunity for garden enthusiasts to down their own garden tools and admire other people’s hard work, involved in creating these private gardens. Since 1927 gardens of quality, character and interest have opened to raise money for the nursing, caring and gardening charities of the scheme. This year seventy five gardens in Norfolk, with fourteen new ones for 2010, all of which have the wow factor, are open, inviting you to sit back and enjoy the view.
Norfolk and Norwich Horticultural Association, chairman Richard Hobbs opens his garden, 16 Witton Lane, Plumstead as the first new Norfolk NGS garden on the 11th April 2010 (11 - 4). (The Old Cottage, Colby Corner is also open). It is a small but full garden with a wide range of plants, many rare and unusual. In spring there are species tulips, daffodils, scillas, dogtooth violets and many more bulbs. Woodland plants such as trilliums and wood anemones abound. Winter flowering shrubs, climbers and evergreens provide structure for the garden which has been featured in 'The Garden magazine'. An opportunity to share information with a member of one of the oldest horticultural societies in the country.
Richard Hobbs said “It is a great honour for any gardener to have a garden accepted for the NGS. The Norfolk and Norwich Horticultural Association aims to share knowledge, promote competitive shows and encourage excellence in horticulture. This is an excellent way of achieving this while raising money for worthwhile charities”.
Norfolk NGS County organiser Anthea Foster said “Norfolk has such a diverse selection of gardens open this year. It provides a garden trail across the county, from urban to rural, formal to quirky and allotments. The garden owners work extremely hard, not only in the garden but promoting them too, providing refreshments and offering gardening advice. So sit back and enjoy the view in someone else’s garden this spring while supporting the NGS.”

The Long Way Home by Charles Way
The story centres on an old woman and her pilgrimage across country back to the seaside village of her childhood. As she treks across the land the ‘old mother’ meets an abandoned dog-boy and a tender friendship is forged.
Charles Way is an award-winning writer of over thirty plays. Eastern Angles audiences will remember his wonderfully atmospheric play In The Bleak Midwinter.
The Long Way Home will be directed by Naomi Jones whose record-breaking 2009 Spring Tour Return To Akenfield gained glowing reviews from The Guardian and The Times.

Dear Norwich City Net,
As you know, Norwich is competing to become the first ever UK City of Culture in 2013 - and with the help of you and your members it could win.
Success would boost the East of England’s economy and deliver valuable social benefits for the people of Norwich and Norfolk.
So please can you encourage friends and members to join this Facebook group - www.facebook.com/group.php?v=wall&gid=355932398754 - to back the bid, share news of events and suggest ways we can strengthen our claim to be the cultural capital of the UK.
Norwich has a well-earned reputation as a fine city that delights visitors with its friendly people and eclectic mix of cultural experiences - from the traditional such as its Norman castle, two cathedrals, Dragon Hall, the open air market, numerous theatres, and fascinating museums to the contemporary such The UEA, The Sainsbury Centre, The Forum, hundreds of pubs and restaurants, amazing art galleries, an exciting nightlife and vibrant festivals.
Becoming the first UK City of Culture in 2013 would help us build on that reputation and encourage more people to make Norwich their destination of choice for holidays, business and life.
Please note: This is not an official campaign page - we have set it up in the absence of anything official. If Norwich City Council would like to take over this page then all they need do is get in touch.

Thank you for your support - you can follow the campaign on Twitter at www.twitter.com/HuwSayer

NHS Norfolk’s Joy of Food team will be visiting supermarkets across Norfolk during April and May as part of a Change4Life & Joy of Food roadshow.
The Joy of Food, which is Lottery-funded, will take a team to various supermarkets to promote both their own and Change4Life initiatives, including quick and easy meal ideas, healthier snack swaps and answer questions from members of the public about food labels. Members of the team will also be promoting seasonal vegetables and finding out how many people take a shopping list when they visit the supermarket.
The roadshow kicks off on Wednesday, April 7th, and will see the Joy of Food team operating stands at the supermarkets, to provide information and advice to people who want to find out about practical shopping and cooking advice. The team is aiming to help people to plan their shopping around their meals, try out new recipes and swap some of their snacks for healthier alternatives.
Caroline Seaman, NHS Norfolk’s Food and Nutrition Lead and Joy of Food Manager, is organising the roadshow and commented: “We are really pleased to have this opportunity to speak to people when they are thinking about food as they do their shopping. We will be setting up a gazebo at various supermarkets, either inside or in the car park and will be encouraging people to talk to us about their shopping habits, discuss how they could make healthy changes to their meals or snacks and discuss new recipe ideas.
“The roadshow also allows us to promote some of the key Change4Life messages, like swapping sugary snacks for healthier alternatives, reducing portion size to suit the individual and easy ways to get your 5 A DAY.
“But we also want to be a resource to help people or answer their questions, for example if they want to find out more about seasonal fruit and vegetables, how to compare the nutritional content figures on food labels, or to find out how they can reduce the amount of food they throw away.
“We are very grateful to the supermarkets who are hosting us and hope more may come on board over the next few weeks too. The Joy of Food team will be wearing 5 A DAY t-shirts on the day, so if you see them, stop us and ask your question!”
The team will also be offering some interactive food demonstrations and tasting sessions, to show people some simple but nutritious recipe ideas they could try at home.
Caroline added: “I hope people make the most of this opportunity to get one-to-one advice about their food choices and diet. We will be able to help people choose alternative snacks and meals, or new recipes which include their favourite foods. If the roadshow is successful, we may look to develop a similar tour in the future.
“We would also like to offer individuals the opportunity to sign up to the Joy of Food programme and will be accepting contact details from anyone who wants to learn some basic cooking skills to make choosing a healthier diet easier."

Women's football was extremely popular in the 1920s. Indeed, on Boxing Day 1920, 53,000 fans packed into Goodison Park to watch the Dick, Kerr's Ladies beat the St Helens Ladies 4-0.
It's hard to tell whether or not this news item supported the ban, though its cameraman clearly enjoyed observing the players in their knitted kit undergoing a rigorous exercise regime. And keep your eyes peeled for a very dodgy-looking chap in tweeds and a Hitler moustache. (Robin Baker)
New rules giving patients greater dignity during their stay in hospital are coming into force. From today, Thursday April 1st 2010, patients must be accommodated in areas used only by members of the same sex, with some justifiable exceptions on clinical grounds.
The issue has been discussed by members of NHS Norfolk's Board yesterday (Wednesday, March 31), who welcomed the changes and acknowledged the efforts made by local hospitals to prepare for the new rules.
The NHS Constitution says patients "have the right to be treated with dignity and respect". NHS Norfolk is advising patients that it operates a patients help and advice line which patients can call in case of concerns or questions.
NHS Norfolk's Chief Nurse, Maureen Carson, said: "Spending time in hospital can be stressful for both patients and their families but the new arrangements will provide greater dignity for patients."
Same-sex accommodation can be provided in:
- Same-sex wards, where the whole ward is occupied by men or women only
- Single rooms
- Mixed wards, where men and women are in separate bays or rooms.
Patients should not have to pass directly through opposite-sex areas to reach their own facilities, nor should they be able to look into opposite sex rooms. Men and women should not have to share mixed bathing and WC facilities, unless they need specialised equipment such as hoists or specialist baths.
Importantly, patients can expect to be treated by clinical staff of either sex. All members of hospital staff are permitted to work in, walk through or look into any wards regardless of gender as part of their professional duties.
Maureen Carson said: "Patients have the right to same-sex accommodation. My advice to patients who feel they are not receiving same-sex accommodation is to raise this immediately with ward staff.
"Patients, relatives and carers can also call NHS Norfolk's Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) to report any breaches of the rules and the circumstances of their call will be investigated thoroughly."
Acute NHS hospital care in the NHS Norfolk area is provided at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, King's Lynn. Community hospital care is provided by Norfolk Community Health and Care and NHS mental health care is provided by the Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health Partnership Trust. All have worked hard to prepare for the new rules, they have assured NHS Norfolk they are ready and they are obliged to publish a declaration of compliance on their websites.
NHS Norfolk has also worked closely with the patients champion organisation Norfolk Local Involvement Network. Chairman of Norfolk LINk, Patrick Thompson, said: "This moves goes towards making the patient experience far more acceptable in providing dignity and respect in what can be at times very stressful.
"Norfolk LINk has worked hard with its members and the NHS Trusts to ensure the whole experience of a hospital stay is as comfortable and respectful as possible and we welcome this.
"Norfolk LINk will continue to work in all areas of patient welfare across the NHS and Social Care. We also welcome the comments from NHS Norfolk on ensuring that this is high on the agenda for patient care across Norfolk."
Research carried out by the NHS in preparation for same sex accommodation showed women, and elderly women in particular, were most likely to worry about being in mixed-sex accommodation, although male patients also said that they feel reluctant to talk openly and found it embarrassing to be in a mixed-sex setting. Some patients are also strongly opposed to mixed-sex accommodation for cultural or religious reasons.
Most people accept that in some situations there is no alternative to men and women sharing accommodation. This includes situations where patients need urgent, highly specialised or high-tech care. When making this decision, staff must make sure that it is in the interests of all patients affected, and work to move patients into same-sex accommodation as quickly as possible.

THE DEMON BARBERS
Over the last eight years The Demon Barbers have gained major recognition for their original and imaginative approach to traditional music and song. They take mainly traditional ballads, strange tales of myth and magic and coil them, twist them, make them stranger, darker, becoming tales of Gothic danger; they don’t so much make folk rock as make traditional tales quiver and pulse with electricity.
Damien Barber - vocals/guitar/concertina, Bryony Griffith - fiddle/vocals,
Will Hampson - melodeon/harmonica, Lee Sykes - electric bass, Ben Griffith - drums
“Energetic fiddle and passionate, distinctive vocals ‘with driven punchy tunes and songs, drum ‘n’ bass grooves, the odd touch of ska and an ever present feel that this lot know how to party’ result in ‘one of the most exciting acts around… check them out...’”

Visitors to the fifth East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival taking place at Nicholas Everitt Park, Oulton Broad, Lowestoft on Sunday 9th May will be scanning the skies, as organisers, Gable Events, have secured a spectacular flypast by a World War II Royal Air Force Dakota of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and what better way to commemorate it than to have one of its Memorial Flight planes grace the skies above Nicholas Everitt Park on a day that already promises to be jam-packed with the thrills and spills of Chinese dragon boat racing.

The Battle of Britain took place between 10th July and 31st October 1940 above the skies of Southern England and was the only battle of the Second World War that was fought solely in the air. Victory was won against near impossible odds and was due to inspired technology, indomitable group spirit and great individual courage and heroism. The Allied fighter pilots involved in the Battle were to become known as ‘The Few’, acknowledged in Winston Churchill’s famous speech in which he said, “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few”.
The Dakota ZA947 is a sought after display aircraft in the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, commemorating the vital victory and individual heroism and sacrifice of our pilots in the Second World War. It was mainly used to move troops and freight goods and to rescue refugees, either by para-drop or by landing at clandestine airstrips behind enemy lines.
The flypast at the East Anglian Dragon Boat Festival at lunchtime on Sunday 9th May will provide a chance for the crowds to witness the majesty of the Dakota as it soars above the racing dragon boats and it will not be the only attraction! Spectators and competitors alike will be able to take full advantage of the wide variety of entertainment on offer - from fairground rides to fun inflatables and Chinese lion dancing to the performances of the local Venue of Performing Arts - there will be something for everyone!

There is still plenty of time to get a team together and join in the racing and there isn’t a better team building event in the region as hundreds of companies and organisations from across the region have already discovered. Teams of up to 11 people are invited to battle it out in the 30’ Chinese dragon boats with no previous experience necessary. The dragon boats and all equipment are provided, each team is guaranteed a minimum of three races and the top fundraisers for nominated charity, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, will win a superb celebratory meal and use of the gym and spa at the Marriott Sprowston Manor.
As Victoria Cole, Marketing Co-ordinator of local solicitors Birketts LLP, comments; “The Dragon Boat Festival is a great day for staff motivation and team building, whilst also giving us the opportunity to get the Birketts name out there. We enjoy the friendly rivalry between the teams and the family atmosphere plus the opportunity to network in such a fun way! The staff all have such a great time at the Festival, new professional relationships are formed and the chance to raise money for such a great charity really inspires the team members”.
So why not show you have the bulldog spirit of the Battle of Britain and challenge your colleagues and competitors by entering a team into the Dragon Boat Festival today from your company, club or group of friends!

LEFT HAND DRIVE IN THE UK
This is using a left hand drive vehicle on the British Roads, this gives a completely new aspect to viewpoints in driving.
There is a lot of concentration and observation required, so keep a close eye on door mirrors and monitor to where you are sitting on the carriageway. It is so easy to drift to the middle of the road as you have been used to driving left of the centre line.
One of the biggest dangers with a left hand drive is when overtaking, you must leave plenty of room from vehicles in front before you attempt to pull out... front seat passengers can help in your judgements.
One of the biggest problems is turning left as your view from the right is obscured, a major problem is changing gear with the right hand, it's just not used to doing things like this when driving.
During early days while parked on side of road just practice gear changing as much as possible, a real word of warning don't change gear as you meet on coming traffic, because if you miss a gear you could steer off course into their lane...
In 1969 a research team found out countries who drive on the left had a lower accident rate.
When holding back to give way to on coming traffic in built up areas, leave plenty of space in order to move out, returning back to the left side quickly and safely, extras mirrors on the right side are really useful.

DYING FOR A CALL
Just a very important reminder... don't forget drivers who are caught driving a car while using a hand held mobile are likely to be stopped and charged, this will result in a £1000 pound fine for car drivers, this will raise to £2,500 for goods vehicle and coach/bus drivers, plus 3 penalty points on the licence.
Don't forget also switch off the engine if you do stop and talk on the phone while sitting in the vehicle.
While travelling around the countryside on a daily basis there seem to be more and more drivers, holding a phone near their ear and driving... use your hands free!

Don't forget your pharmacy
NHS Norfolk is advising anyone going on holiday this Easter, to visit their community pharmacy first.
Pharmacists can offer help and advice on a range of conditions, to enable people to treat themselves. So, to ensure you make the most of your hols, don't forget to pack a medical kit alongside your suitcase. Hopefully you won't need it, but if you do you'll be glad you were prepared.
Ian Small, deputy head of prescribing and medicines management at NHS Norfolk, said: “Easter is traditionally a time when many people take a holiday. Your local community pharmacy can offer valuable help and advice before you set off.
"Some of the less pleasant parts of a holiday, such as tummy upsets and travel sickness, may be helped by medicines available from your pharmacy. If you are travelling abroad it may be more difficult to locate appropriate medicines when you arrive at your destination.
"While you're at home, make your pharmacist your first port of call rather than your GP. A pharmacist can give prompt and professional advice, and may provide you with over-the-counter medicines to help your condition.
"They can also provide expert help and advice if you're staying at home this Easter, and find yourself feeling unwell over the holiday."
Chris Ball, of the Norfolk Local Pharmacy Committee and manager of Hurn Chemist in Unthank Road, Norwich, added: “We are keen to promote the varied services of community pharmacies. If the staff feel it appropriate they will refer patients to their GP, so if you need help remember to ask your pharmacist first."
The call to see your pharmacist is part of NHS Norfolk's "Choose Well" campaign. The initiative aims to help people find the most appropriate care for their condition.

A thermometer logo signposts the way:
1. The first option is self care - many minor illnesses can be treated with rest and a well-stocked medicines cabinet at home. Make sure you have your regular medicines, plasters, medicines for colds, re-hydration sachets etc. If you have any concerns you can call NHS Direct on 0845 46 47.
2. Pharmacists will be able to offer you some advice about over-the-counter medicines - such as coughs and colds.
3. If you have a minor injury or illness that needs treatment you should call your GP. Remember the Out of Hours service is for urgent problems only, can it wait until morning?
4. If you need to be seen immediately but you do not have a serious illness or injury, you can access the Timber Hill Health Centre in Castle Mall, Norwich (7am-9pm) or the Minor Injuries Unit at Cromer from 8am-8pm. Both are open 365 days a year.
Ian Small added: "We want everyone to have a good break at Easter, and although nobody wants to fall ill on holiday, your community pharmacist can ensure that you're prepared just in case."
There are 119 community pharmacies across NHS Norfolk's area. Pharmacy opening times can be found at www.norfolk.nhs.uk, on the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk, or you can call NHS Direct for details of pharmacy services available in your area on 0845 46 47.

The unique qualities of Norfolk's coast and countryside are celebrated in the latest North Norfolk Artspace exhibition, which runs at Sheringham Little Theatre from March 24 to April 2010.
Entitled Beautiful Norfolk, the show features paintings by well-known local artists Mike Thody, Gita Dickenson and Eric Hopkins, with subjects ranging from crab boats at Cromer, to the lake at Blickling Hall.

Eric, 83, trained at Salisbury College of Art and went on to teach painting at the Royal Army College in Germany in the 1950s before working as sculptor and carver for a London memorial company.
His work has been exhibited many times at the Mall Galleries, London, and at galleries in Norfolk and Bath.
Eric, who is a member of the Royal Society of Oil Painters and the United Society of Artists, moved to Overstrand 36 years ago and is currently working on a book featuring paintings and pencil studies reflecting his love of Norfolk.

Gita trained as an artist in her home country of Latvia and, since moving to Cromer, has concentrated on producing oil paintings capturing the charm and beauty of her adopted home.
Also on show will be work by painter and sculptor Mike Thody, who gained a fine art degree and an MA after retiring from a 35-year career as a building surveyor and architect.
In 2008, Mike, who lives at Hempstead, near Holt, shaped a 12-foot-tall figure based on the Roald Dahl character the BFG from a fallen oak tree at Holt Country Park.

Other sculpture projects have included a commission by English Heritage to create an installation at Mount Grace Priory in Yorkshire, while painting subjects range from a series of studies of Norfolk churches, to Cromer's Hotel de Paris and boats at Wells-next-the-Sea.
