‘Stripped’

The gallery is open Friday – Sunday 11am – 4pm.

Exhibition dates: Friday 31st July – Sun 30th August

The new guest exhibition at Beyond the Image is a series of black and white portraits by Alex Kilbee who recently returned from South Africa. He was featured a few weeks ago in the Diss Express.

Alex writes:

'Stripped'
In these uncertain times we are left feeling that we have been worshipping style over substance.

So long as it looked shiny and new, we didn't care how well it was crafted - after all there would be something else new and shiny along in a minute wouldn't there?

Photography has not been immune to this.

Traditional portrait photography ideas have been discarded in favour of creating a 'Photoshop work of art' - something that is style over substance.

In this exhibition I hope to display images which capture not only my subjects' unique characters, but also strip my work back to the basics of portraiture and focus purely on the interaction between my subjects and I. Taking my work right back to it's beginnings and rediscovering the joys of simple, strong portraits.

Topcroft Post Mill

Topcroft post mill is first recorded on the 1838 O.S. map and the earliest known miller was John Rounce from 1846-1856. Edward and Frederick Eldred were listed as corn millers in White's of 1854.

William Lant Duffield owned the mill fom 1909-1916, he also owned Saxlingham Thorpe black towermill and the watermills at Flordon, Saxlingham Thorpe and Tasburgh.

Topcroft mill had ceased to work by 1922 and the sails and fantail were removed in 1924.

Various parts went to other mills including the windshaft, which went to East_Harling_towermill in 1975.

Alerter
All you ever wanted to know about
being a retained FireFighter in Suffolk

First Aid is simple...

"There's nowt to it. First Aid is simple", were the words uttered by George, the lead instructor on our four day First Aid course.

It seemed there were so many things that we just wouldn't be able to assist with. And in George's words "there's f*** all you can do abart it". So much so that, by Day 3, when he asked us what we could do we'd all chorus, "f*** all!"

I even thought about weaving it in to one of my practical sessions that signalled the end of the course today. In fact, thinking about it, I did... When I'd finished dealing with an unconscious casualty who then needed CPR, I was asked a set of probing questions by our Fire Service examiner. I answered these as fully as I could but the last one was asking me how I'd deal with a certain injury. I answered by saying, "as George would say, f*** all!".

A pass on that bit. Thank you...

Then the long wait to do the practical session with a live casualty and being assessed by an external nurse (this means she wasn't part of the Fire Service and not that she sat outside while assessing us...).

The whole shebang probably didn't last more than 10 minutes but it felt like a lifetime. Thankfully I remembered to ask my casualty about SAMPLE. This isn't to be confused with asking the casualty for a sample. Unless, of course, I was going to add pregnancy testing to my basic First Aid repertoire! SAMPLE means asking about Signs and Symptoms, Allergies, Medication, Past medical history, Last intake of food or drink and Events leading up to the me finding the casualty.

After I had applied a state of the art, almost Tourniquet style dressing, I had a one sided conversation with the Ambulance control, telling them the life history of my casualty and hoping this purgatory would end. It didn't so I started asking questions again about the banged head, took the pulse and generally made things more comfortable for the casualty.

And finally it was over. Pass. And only George there to congratulate me... Everyone else with much further than me to travel had gone in with furthest first, leaving old Billy No Mates to go last.

Back to the real world tomorrow and four days worth of work and e-mails to catch up on... Oh joy!

Yes Sir Jimmy Saville with Clunk Click Every Trip,

Norfolk Farmer builds £50,000 classic cars in a shed
Story courtesy www.metro.co.uk

Gleaming: The new owner paid £50,000 for this Aston Martin DBR1 replica

Tractor boy Andy Soar could soon be ploughing ahead with a new career building classic Aston Martin cars. The farmer has sold his first replica of one of the country's most successful racing cars for £50,000. Not bad for someone who divides his time between farming 80 hectares (200 acres) and 'tinkering' in his shed.

'When it's raining and not farming weather, I come into the workshop,' he said.

Hood: Andy admires the engine

'It is immensely satisfying to drive something you have created yourself.'

Mr Soar, 38, spent just four months building the Aston Martin DBR1, 50 years after it won Le Mans and the World Sportscar Championship.

He owns the moulds to the 1950s car after buying the rights from ARA Racing two years ago and built the chassis from scratch.

Class: The dashboard of the DBR1

He used a Jaguar S-Type engine and gear box, and parts from other pre-1973 cars to complete the replica.
'Aston Martin made only five DBR1s and two DBR2s and they are still in existence estimated at £7million each,' said Mr Soar, who farms near Diss, Norfolk.

'So £50,000 is just a fraction of the cost.'

Next up is a DBR for a German customer – in-between the harvest.
