All you ever wanted to know about
being a retained FireFighter in Suffolk

Suffolk Fire and Rescue at the cutting edge - me thinks not!

Last week rumours were rife. The story had got round the station like wildfire.

We were soon to be given training on stab vests! Stab vests - f*** me! Things must be getting rough in Lowestoft if we're being given stab vests. If I'd wanted one of them I'd have joined the boys in blue!

No, you dosey pillock. It's Stab-Fast.

That doesn't sound much better to me. Stab-Fast, Stab-Slow - whichever it is it's going to sting!

And then the penny drops a very long way indeed.

Stab-Fast is a new piece of kit being rolled out across Suffolk for use at RTC's (Road Traffic Collisions). In a matter of seconds these adjustable supports can be attached to a vehicle, giving excellent stabilisation. The kit is simple and virtually firefighter proof - although Al and Shambles haven't been let loose together with one of these.

I did say that this is being rolled out across Suffolk. And it is. Every fire engine in the brigade will have a Stab-Fast. All except dear old Ladder 2 at Normanshurst. Ladder 2 at Bury will have it. All the pumps at Headquarters will have it. But not us.

Is it because Lowestoft is a safer place than the rest of Suffolk (unlikely), is it because in the very near future we may be shuffling off to Norfolk (possible) or is it... Suffolk are just too tight to buy that one extra set?

I think I'm on the right track when we're told that Suffolk decided not to purchase a simple wedge that can be incorporated in the kit, adding to the stabilising effect. How much money did they save by not buying that? Obviously not enough to buy the kit for Ladder 2 at Normanshurst!

And are Suffolk at the cutting edge by introducing this kit? Not likely. Just a quick trawl of the Internet shows me that in Ireland, New Zealand and Australia it's been in use for over two years. And that's without the Germans, the Dutch and everybody else...

Better late than never I suppose.

There is an action packed agenda at Bircham Windmill this summer. Starting with a new event for all Teddy Bear lovers, on July 27th there will be a Teddy Bears Hospital at Bircham Mill along with Best Dressed Teddy, Bear Treasure Hunt, Teddy bear face painting, story telling and lots more.

On Friday August the 1st we are very excited to see the return of ‘Pals Productions’ who performed at Bircham Windmill last year and are performing ‘Henry VIII’ for us this year in the grounds of Bircham Windmill. The Hiring Fair is a special event which has proved incredibly popular in the past. Run by Sally North and her band of helpers, children get the chance to see what it would be like to get a job in Edwardian times. Jobs for girls and boys, with certificates of competence to take home and all FREE.

Two regular eventers are returning in August. Celia Reed with her wool stall and spinning wheel will be here from August 7th to 19th and Phil and Linda Young with their Pole Lathe wood turning and Loom Weaving from 14th to 25th, we will certainly be in a spin for those weekends!

Our Traditional Sports Day will be on August 25th this year, so children and adults alike need to get in training for this highly competitive (that’s the adults) and sporting (that’s the children!) event. Rosettes for all. Also Basket Weaving demo and stall, Story Telling and Funky Crafts Stall.

The last event of the holidays is a quilted cushions demonstration and stall. I think we will all need a cushion to rest our heads on after all that!

I do hope you can join us for some fun at Bircham Windmill this summer. Don’t forget that everyday we have the windmill museum to climb, childrens treasure hunt and baking corner, cycle hire, art gallery with a new exhibition each calendar month, gift shops, animals to cuddle – including falabella foal due any day and baby guinea pig and of course the tearooms for your refreshments.

Seafront Fun on Sunday

Vibrant music and exciting dance moves are on offer at the Sealife Gardens on Marine Parade on Sunday 27 July when the Melting Pot cabaret programme goes Latin American!

Following the successful weekly sessions at Café Nova earlier this year, the Melting Pot is having a summer season, launching with a celebration of culture where everyone can have fun and find out more about Latin American and Caribbean culture.

If you watched the TV dance shows and wished you could move like that – now is your chance! Come down to the Sealife Gardens and learn the steps of Merengue and Bachata – two dance styles from the Dominican Republic that will get you moving and having fun. There’ll be a demonstration by experienced professionals and then a workshop where anyone can join in and get dancing.

Samba and salsa music to get you in the mood from DJs Alex and Laura will get your feet tapping – and you can sample some home-cooked Latin American food for a really authentic experience.

Argentinian guitarist Ariel Tula Lorenzana will also be performing – a virtuoso on the electric guitar he’s performed both with his band and as a solo performer in Argentina, Spain and since 2006, the UK.

Starting at 5pm, the event is free and open to all.

The Melting Pot is organised by SeaChange Arts and supported by Comeunity.

If you’re a young person under 25 who would like to be involved in the workshops and performance please contact SeaChange Arts on 01493 846550.

Lowestoft 1550-1750
David Butcher

Boydell & Brewer of Woodbridge has just published Lowestoft (Suffolk) author David Butcher's latest book, a 354 page hardback entitled 'Lowestoft, 1550 - 1750 : Development and Change in a Suffolk Coastal Town', with 24 in text half tone illustrations and six line maps, the book is priced at £50.00.

www.boydell.co.uk

Lowestoft has grown from a small urban community to become Suffolk’s second largest town; and this book provides a vivid picture of the town and its inhabitants during the early modern period. Making full use of surviving documentation, in particular the parish registers, it begins with an overview of Lowestoft’s medieval history, then proceeds to investigate topographical development, demographic features, occupational structure, social geography, house-building and interior décor, wealth and inheritance, maritime pursuits, agriculture, local government, education and literacy, religious affiliation, and urban identity. Wherever possible, the town is set into a national and European context, and its maritime nature fully brought out.

David Butcher's other published works have included:
1975 - Waveney Valley (East Anglian Magazine, Ipswich)
1979 - The Driftermen (Tops'l Books, Reading)
1980 - The Trawlermen (Tops'l Books, Reading)
1982 - Living from the Sea (Tops'l Books, Reading)
1987 - Following the Fishing (Tops'l Books, London)
1995 - The Ocean's Gift (Centre of East Anglian Studies, UEA, Norwich)
