The Long Way Home, Eastern Angles Theatre Company

Eastern Angles Theatre Company present
The Long Way Home by Charles Way

The story centres on an old woman and her pilgrimage across country back to the seaside village of her childhood. As she treks across the land the ‘old mother’ meets an abandoned dog-boy and a tender friendship is forged.

Charles Way is an award-winning writer of over thirty plays. Eastern Angles audiences will remember his wonderfully atmospheric play In The Bleak Midwinter.

The Long Way Home will be directed by Naomi Jones whose record-breaking 2009 Spring Tour Return To Akenfield gained glowing reviews from The Guardian and The Times.

The Chinese Years of the Animals - Audio Story

From Prince Bertie the Frog
Read by Natasha Gostwick. Duration 7 mins

Now You See Me, Now You Don't! - driving hint

F O G means FOOT OFF GAS!
Now You See Me, Now You Don't!

Only the other day I commented on the lack of bad weather which is not teaching our younger drivers the proper skills of survival on our UK roads, very little snow, ice and fog, but what lovely sunny days we have been getting.

Working in Reading and Bracknell area's driving around in the latest Audi 6 (if you have been pondering over whether to buy one, the answer is yes), what a car; so flexible, the handling is superb, but lets talk more of that at a later date.

It does not matter what car you have there is nothing to help you cope with the very low sun, shining through the trees causing dazzle on the roads, at many points the vision is completely lost, so slow down, lower the window to hear of any traffic, watch for pedestrians walking towards you on your side of the road.

How nice to be in such lovely weather, but driving home later in the day and early evening, what have we now got, yes, fog really dense in places, but nothing seems to have changed, drivers with NO lights on, some with only side lights, drivers travelling much too close, not slowing down, and as the hours tick by distances to stop has really decreased.

Everybody in a hurry to get home, all in a bubble containing the false sense of security. Fog restricts vision, we all know we have less time to adjust to hazards and how to avoid them, but everybody pushes along regardless.

In thick fog on motorways it is easy to pick up speed because you cannot see how quickly you are approaching and passing things, don't treat the lights in front as a lighthouse, and just follow them.

At junctions lower windows to hear, be very careful turning right, especially across dual carriageways, don't miss use fog lamps, all cars in Europe must have front and rear fog lamps fitted, and as the name suggests for use in fog and not slightly misty weather, drivers in the UK can only legally use them in fog and falling snow, if the visibility is below 100 metres.

Sadly you can't rely on other drivers being sensible, all you can do is be on the defensive, give yourself more time to avoid them, and drive in a way that reduces any risk of yourself and others.

If everyone thought of the word 'FOG' it would be a much safer world.

F O G means FOOT OFF GAS!

With our changing weather this is this week's motoring hint, you always hear it first on the 'BLOG' until the next time, stay safe and drive safe.

THE EDIBLE COUNTRY GARDEN - by Sara Johnson

THE EDIBLE COUNTRY GARDEN
by Sara Johnson

With the recent 'grow your own' resurgence and long waiting lists for allotments, I have embarked on a redesign of my own garden to include more productive planting.

My existing vegetable plot is situated at the end of the garden with espaliered fruit trees as a dividing screen.

However, I would now like to grow more soft fruit as well as asparagus. Initially, I was reluctant to give up any more space to growing food, but I've now resolved to grow this produce in a decorative way, incorporating it into the existing aesthetic style of a modern country garden.

Watch this blog to see how the project progresses.

If you need help with ideas for your own garden, you can contact me on 01508 483992 or email info@sara-johnson.co.uk

Calling all Unpublished Norfolk Poets
Poetry-next-the-Sea Competition 2010

Poetry-next-the-Sea, www.poetry-next-the-sea.com, which runs the annual poetry festival in Wells (May 7–9), is staging its third open poetry competition, supported by Norfolk Community Foundation. The winners will be announced during the festival.

The competition is open to anyone living in Norfolk who has not had a pamphlet or collection of poems published. Writers whose poems have appeared in magazines or anthologies are eligible to enter.

The closing date for entries is Wednesday, April 7. There are two categories, student age 13 to 16 and adult over 16. Application forms are available from Wells and Fakenham Libraries or Susan Marshall tel. 01328 711813, email suzy948@btinternet.com.

Writers can enter up to three poems. Each poem must be 20 lines or less and must be unpublished. There is no charge to enter the competition.

Mike Bannister returns as judge for the second year. Mike is chair of Café Poets Halesworth and is president of the Suffolk Poetry Society. His poems have appeared in The London Magazine, Envoi, Other Poetry, Brittle Star, The Interpreters House, and a number of anthologies. His poem A Fourth Warming was short-listed for the Housman Society’s Poetry Prize (1992).

Commenting on last year’s judging process Mike Bannister said: "To be asked to read more than 100 poems was both a delight and an honour. Every poem bore its own small spark of nature. At first reading, 40 poems showed some evidence of crafting. To arrive at a final list, the friends and enemies of good poetry were unmasked one by one: cliché or originality? imagery or reportage? compression or long-winded? rhythm or broken-backed dissonance? plain word or pedantry? dull fact or metaphor? detachment or sentimentality? echoes or chimes or heavy-handed rhymes?"

First prize in 2009 went to Rob Knee for The Ark. Emily Trend won the student category for her poem In Memory of My Great Grandfather, Edward Theo Trend.

Fiona Fraser, Joint Artistic Director, Poetry-next-the-Sea festival, said: "We are looking forward to hearing from new Norfolk poets. We invite the winners to read their poems at the festival, which is an excellent showcase for both local and national poets. I would like to thank Norfolk Community Foundation for their support."

This year’s festival, Poetry-next-the-Sea 2010, Singing, Saying and Spirit-Level runs from Friday 7th May to Sunday 9th May and features Ronald Blythe, Kevin-Crossley-Holland, Joe Dunthorne, Laura Elliott, Grey Gowrie, Hugh Lupton, Sam Riviere, Jo Shapcott, Angus Sinclair, Pauline Stainer, Jon Stallworthy, Jack Underwood, Tom Warner and Julia Webb along with a series of poetry, voice and storytelling workshops.

Full details will soon be online at www.poetry-next-the-sea.com
Brochures will be available in mid March.

Grey Heron - Norfolk Wildlife

Grey Heron

These large, striking birds can be spotted standing motionless at the water's edge, waiting patiently for prey.

Characteristics
The Grey heron is an unmistakable, large bird with its long legs, long graceful neck, and long, pointed yellow bill. The Grey Heron is approximately 84-120cm in length with a wingspan of approx 155-175cm.

Habitat
They Grey Heron can be found in the vicinity of lakes, ponds and rivers. They nest in colonies, usually in tall trees but sometimes on cliffs, in reed-beds and in bushes. They feed on fish, amphibians, mollusks, insects and even small rodents and birds.

Behaviour
Grey herons wade through shallow water searching for prey such as small fish and amphibians. When they have found a suitable location, they will stand motionless waiting patiently for the right moment to stab the prey with its beak. When a small fish or animal comes within its reach, the bird will stab the prey and swallow it whole.

Herons fly with the head drawn back and feet trailing behind. The wing beats are slow and the curved wings form an m-shape. Some individuals migrate to Western Europe over winter.

Womans Work - The Notebook

My name is Lesley Kershaw and I run WomansWork as a voluntary service to help women in business. This resource provides support for start-ups, the self-employed, those wishing to get back into employment, those facing redundancy and established business-women in the 6 counties of the East of England, with more coming on-line in the future.

The website is a one-stop place for news but also a direct link to organisations and businesses that support women in their economic future. But with in the Useful Links section under ‘Your Businesses’ women can promote themselves with a listing of £25 for a whole year.

Every month I gather together the information that has been sent to me, for example: training, information, events opportunities, websites and networking events for each county and produce a free downloadable newsletter called The Notebook. It’s also a great place for women to highlight and promote their own businesses, events, requests or if you have something to share with the Woman’s Work community. The list can be endless.
To be reminded when a new newsletter has been published each month, you can subscribe for free via the website and you will then be sent an email link to the website to download your latest copy of The Notebook. You can download as many county newsletters as you wish, especially useful if you live on or near bordering counties. Contact details are available on the website and my email address is available with your subscription confirmation.

The advertising buttons are a great way to raise the profile of your company.
Please contact Lesley Kershaw on 01379 651161 or go to www.womanswork.co.uk

Fat Man on a Bicycle c1914 - BFI YouTube archive

This short film - also known as 'W-H-O-R-K a la Pimple' - follows the pattern of previous entries featuring Fred Evans' 'Pimple' character, with a simple set-up (in this case, Pimple teaching a fat man how to ride a bike) followed by a series of incidents in which they crash into innocent bystanders and tradespeople before they are stopped and retribution is exacted. This usually involves some kind of physical punishment, much in the way of comic strip characters being whacked for some misdemeanour.

The deliberate misspelling of W-H-ORK, with the extra 'h', is a feature that crops up in Pimple films occasionally, although the reason is obscure. (Bryony Dixon)

Singing workshops to be launched in South Norfolk

Singing workshops to be launched in South Norfolk

Award-winning singing workshops for mental health service users, staff, carers and friends are now being launched in South Norfolk after five years of success in Norwich and King’s Lynn.

Voice coach Chrissy Parsons West - who is well-known as the director of Norwich-based community choir Hearts and Voices - will lead the new sessions over a six-week trial period at the Connaught Bowls Club, Station Road, Attleborough. The sessions run from 11am-12.30pm on Tuesdays from February 23rd - March 30th. Anyone interested is welcome to come along, and if the workshops prove successful then more could follow.

This latest expansion of SYHO stems from the scheme’s success in lifting the spirits of hospital staff, service users and carers by bringing them together in a fun and informal atmosphere.

Mental health service users, both past and present, have gone on to join community choirs, take part in concerts, and attend training courses. In 2006 the scheme won the Eli Lilly Award for ‘Regeneration in Mental Health’.

The workshops create an informal atmosphere where participants come together as equals, growing in confidence and experiencing a real sense of achievement as they make music together.

The workshops are open to anyone who wants to sing - and there is no requirement to read music. Participants are guaranteed great fun, and the chance to sing enjoyable arrangements of popular songs, and easy harmony songs from all over the world. There is no charge - although donations are welcome - and refreshments are provided.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust - Gifts for Valentines Day 2010!

How to give an ‘otter’ gift this Valentine’s Day!

Why not show someone you really care and help local wildlife at the same time? Norfolk Wildlife Trust launches a new range of sponsorship gifts for any occasion that will care for some of Norfolk’s most beloved species and their threatened habitats.

Each Wildlife Gift costs just £20 and can be bought as a gift or for yourself. Sponsors receive an attractive Wildlife Gift Box containing a personalised certificate, a beautifully illustrated factsheet and information about the work of Norfolk Wildlife Trust. Choose from five iconic species:

Swallowtail butterfly - found only in Norfolk, swallowtails can be seen at Hickling and Ranworth Broads. Show your support by sponsoring a swallowtail butterfly and helping to safeguard unique wetland habitats.

Otter - once almost lost from the waterways of Norfolk, otters are now often spotted on our wetland nature reserves. Our wetland management in the Broads directly helps otters prosper.

Barn Owl – a barn owl in flight is spectacular to see, but the habitats they depend on are threatened. This gift helps NWT restore essential meadow and grassland hunting grounds for barn owls.

Dartmoor Pony – NWT’s pony herd provides conservation grazing on many fen and heathland sites, creating habitats for rare species such as nightjar, small red damselfly and marsh gentian.

Shetland Sheep – NWT’s ‘Flying Flock’ graze many heathland and grassland sites providing essential habitat for snipe, silver-studded blue butterflies, and green-winged orchid among other species.

Fundraising Manager Jono Leadley said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to support NWT’s conservation work and give a unique gift at the same time! The packs have been designed to highlight the conservation work the Trust does in the county and how important this is for enhancing the populations of some of Norfolk’s most charismatic and threatened wildlife.”
